A recent article in the New York Times science section suggests that exercise has been shown to reduce the forward curvature of the spine (kyphosis).
Quoting a 2009 study published in the journal Osteoporosis International, the article states that ‘progression of kyphosis was prevented in those who did exercises to strengthen the extension muscles of the spine, three times a week for a year.’ A further study of women who already had kyphosis indicated that those who carried out the prescribed exercises ‘maintained a small improvement in their usual and best measures of kyphosis’.
