For Health Care Professionals : Join Bone Health Group

osteoporosis bone health, fracture riskOwn the Bone is a Web-based, clinically-proven quality improvement program designed to identify, evaluate and initiate evidence based care in fracture patients age 50 and over. It is simple to enroll, easy to use and packed full of tools to ease the implementation process.  The Own the Bone measures are consistent with recommendations from the National Osteoporosis Foundation, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Joint Commission, the World Health Organization, and the American Medical Association. Own the Bone was specifically developed to make the current recommendations easy to implement. By simply entering information in the Web-based data registry, your institution can immediately quantify results and begin to see how the measures can positively affect patient care.

The program focuses on fragility fracture care, rather than osteoporosis prevention. The seriousness of the fracture episode provides physicians with a “teachable moment” in which it is possible to impact behavior. The AOA believes that a cooperative effort between patients and their health care providers can result in a ripple effect throughout entire communities. The AOA encourages you to Own the Bone.

Bone Health Bulletin, is a quarterly newsletter that informs medical professionals about Own the Bone and developments in bone health.

Back issues of the Bone Health Bulletin are available for downloading and viewing in PDF format.

Hip fractures more likely than cancer

Hip fractures more likey than cancerAlthough breast and other cancers top most women’s health-worries list, osteoporosis-related fractures should also be a major concern.

In fact, a woman’s risk for an osteoporosis-caused hip fracture is the same as her breast, ovarian, and uterine cancer risk combined.

A broken hip, which is most common in people older than 65, can be a potentially life-changing or even life-threatening event, and may require surgery and long recovery times.  Some never fully recover from a broken hip and have to use a walker or wheelchair.
